The 911S was updated for the 1972 model year, the same capacity 2341cc engine as the 911E but tuned to produce 190bhp. The 911S was the first production 911 to have a front spoiler; this small lip reduced front-end lift by a claimed 40 percent.

The Carrera 3.2 had essentially the same galvanised body as the outgoing SC. The engine was claimed by Porsche to be 80 percent new and was the first production 911 motor to feature an ECU to control the ignition and fuel systems. Getrag G50 gearbox appeared in 1987.
